Nadine Meertens
Doctoral researcher in Philosophy of Mind
I am a philosopher specialising in the philosophy of mind and its intersections with philosophy of science, artificial intelligence and biology.
My research specifically focuses on the philosophy of animal minds and artificial intelligence. Specifically, I focus on comparative cognition and the intersections between the philosophy of biology and robotics in the context of minds and cognitive science. My current project is focused on developing a conceptual framework of awareness, applicable across a broad range of species and systems.
Currently, I am a PhD student in neurophilosophy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, affiliated with the Chair of Philosophy of Mind, and the Graduate School in Systemic Neuroscience. I am a member of the Cognition, Values, and Behaviour group (CVBE) at the Munich Interactive Intelligence Initiative (Mi3).
For my doctoral project, part of the EU-funded EMERGE project, I investigate emergent awareness in minimal collectives. I aim to develop a conceptual framework for collaborative awareness, introducing a novel concept of awareness and creating tools to assess it in both artificial and biological systems. My work will extend this framework to apply beyond individual agents, exploring awareness in collective systems.
